Cary Kornfeld, Ph.D.
Cary Kornfeld, Inventor is the culmination of varied interests in many fields. His list of accomplishments began with a NSF Undergraduate Research Fellowship. Earning a B.S. degree in Chemistry from UCLA where he was a member of UCLA's Honors College. A graduate student in Marine Geochemistry in the Oceanography Dept at the University of Washington. A Masters Degree and PhD from Stanford with graduate courses in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
Involved on the original design team for the MIPS microprocessor, Dr. Kornfeld designed and built a collection of innovative graphics chips for a workstation which became the first SUN workstation. This led to employment at Xerox PARC. While at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, Dr. Kornfeld was the Principal Investigator/MTS in the Research Division. During which time Dr. Kornfeld developed one of the first truly functioning optical computers. These remain the largest neuro-computers ever built.
Dr. Kornfeld was a founded of The NEC Research Institute in Princeton. He also taught Computer Science Classes at Princeton University where he began experimenting with stereoscopic imaging. He then a co-founded Interval Research and developed a series of innovative, inventive telepresence systems.
Kornfeld Design: an independent consultancy and home for developing technical ideas and concepts is where Dr. Kornfeld spent most of his lab time developing some of inventions described on this website.
A recent client of Dr. Kornfeld is Dr. Robert Chase of Stanford University Medical School. Their shared interest in stereoscopic imaging resulted in a series of stereoscopic imaging systems -- a museum kiosk system, a variety of video capture systems and eventually a system for using stereoscopic video for teaching surgery and anatomy.
Over the years Dr. Kornfeld has coordinated a number of conferences taking place at Stanford: Hot Chips, Hot Interconnects, Bio-informatics, and has participated on program committees for several others including Compcon, and Asilomar Microprocessor Workshop. Dr. Kornfeld maintains a visiting scientist affiliation with Microsoft and continues to participate in a variety of professional activities.
